Art appreciation: I know what I like
Members of the group will talk about specific paintings or sculptures,
giving the history of the artist, putting it in an historical context
and saying what it is they like or dislike about it.
Book Circle
The Book Circle was the first of the literary groups to be set up, and
still has some of the original members. The group has a comfortable maximum of 12
persons and meets 9 times per annum (September to June, excluding December). A
programme is drawn up in May/June each year. There is no special 'theme' for
the selection of books; everyone makes their own choice so that the range
of books studied is wide and varied. Each month a book is presented by the
member who chose it, and often in a highly individual manner. A visit to
a place with a literary association is usually made each summer.

for lively but friendly and tolerant debates. Past topics have included
"The Development of India since Independence", "The future for transport in London",
"Changes in World Population", "Do we really need identity cards", "Islam and its relationship to the Western way of life",
an emergency debate on the events of 9/11 and dozens more.

for 1 1/2 hours. Recent subjects have been, Law and order, Cloning and the EU.

life style. New members could be accompanied to the Family History Centre and

History
None of us are historians, however we all have a love of history. We decide at
the beginning of the year what we will discuss and then take it in turns to lead
a meeting. Subjects have ranged from Islamic history to Florence Nightingale.
Above all it is fun.

Literature One
The Group plans a varied programme of reading ; besides novels we try
to include a biography, poetry and a play in our programme of reading
for the year. We take it in turns to introduce and lead a discussion on
the chosen work each month. We try to round off the year with a group
visit to a place of interest. This year we had lunch at the Cheshire
Cheese followed by a visit to Dr Johnson's House in the City of London.
back
Literature Two
Our members choose books they would like to share with one another. The choices
have varied from a play written 2500 years ago to a novel published in 1999, and
we have revisited some well-known authors from our schooldays. Occasionally we
have a "pot-pourri", when all members are asked to choose and read a poem or
other short item which gives us a varied and entertaining afternoon.
back
Poetry
The group will look at lesser known poets with significant works, and unpublished
works of members where applicable. It is hoped that the group will choose some of
these to be recited at a future Ealing U3A meeting.
back
Rambling
Members meet usually at Ealing Broadway Station, then use freedom passes on
the bus or train, walk for about three miles and have a pub lunch. Last year
the group walked on Hampstead Heath; from Paddington to Regent's Park on the
canal; from Kingston to Hampton Court and from Hampton Court to East Molesey
on the river bank. The group has on average 14 walkers.
