One issue that always seems to come up when we talk to other college students is the concern about professors not understanding them. They worry that if they don’t stand up for themselves, they’re going to get absolutely trampled. There’s no point in thinking that people are out to get you at every turn. It´s only going to make you keep your guard up. Trust us, people can really tell when you don’t trust them. While it’s true that everyone has to earn your trust, you have to make sure that you’re not going overboard. Just thinking that you’re going to have to ignore common sense and go with just anything that comes along isn’t a good idea.
Arguing with your professor automatically puts you in a defensive position that isn’t for your own good. The professor has the home field advantage. They have been at the university a lot longer than you, they know the “lay of the land”, and they probably have their own little fan club. Students like a certain professor to the point where they could jump in to defend them instead of you.
Instead of trying to fight the battle directly, you need to take a few steps away from it. Think about it from this point of view: why are they attacking you? More to the point, is it really an attack? If it’s not an attack at all, you could be overreacting and causing problems because of it.
Don’t get discouraged! If they feel that you’ve done something serious, then there are steps in place to protect both parties. For example, if you’ve been accused of plagiarism, you would have to someone prove this is the case. They can’t just ruin your academic career with something so serious. On the other hand, you need to make sure that you’re not coming under suspicion just because you happened to quote things incorrectly. Checking all of your work before you turn it on thoroughly definitely makes all of the difference in the world.
If you have to directly confront your professor, you need to make sure that you keep it civil. No one likes when things get out of hand. You might be tempted to get upset, start showing your feelings, and make demands that aren’t founded on logic. You’re caught up in the moment, and that’s understandable. Unfortunately, it’s going to get you in some hot water. You must make sure that you keep your cool! Getting upset puts you in a very weak position. It also shows that you’re not capable of really handling anything solid.
Hang in there!
